https://journal.uim-makassar.ac.id/ashlition/article/view/2245

This study investigates the types and functions of code mixing used by Cinta Laura and Luna Maya in the Bicara Cinta podcast episode Toxic Relationships Pernah Bikin Aku Mati Rasa. The study aims to identify the types of code mixing based on Muysken’s (2000) theory and analyze their communicative functions in the conversation. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this research. The data were obtained from the utterances containing code mixing in the podcast and were analyzed using Muysken’s classification of insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The findings revealed a total of 111 instances of code mixing. Insertion was the most dominant type with 58 occurrences (52.25%), followed by alternation with 49 occurrences (44.14%), and congruent lexicalization with 4 occurrences (3.60%). The results also showed that code mixing was mainly used to emphasize certain meanings, express feelings and opinions, create a more relaxed atmosphere, and make the conversation more engaging. These findings indicate that code mixing serves as an important communication strategy in bilingual podcast interactions, enabling speakers to convey ideas and emotions more naturally and effectively.
Novriza Ramadhani PutriSultan Shofwatul AnamMuhammad Gibran ArdiantoRoza Amelia PutriHannahn Hazrawih

https://journal.uim-makassar.ac.id/ashlition/article/view/2255

Slips of the tongue are common speech errors that provide insights into the cognitive processes involved in language production. This study aims to identify and analyse the types of slips of the tongue produced by Anwar Sanjaya Pigano during his appearance on the podcast PWK (Podcast Warung Kopi). The research employed a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from the YouTube episode entitled “pwk – ngerubuhin rumah orang tua, Anwar Bab di kejar bapaknya bawa g*lok!!” hosted by Praz. The researchers gathered data through observation, transcription, identification, and documentation of utterances containing slips of the tongue. The analysis was based on Victoria Fromkin’s (1973) classification, which includes anticipation, perseveration, and substitution. The findings revealed seven instances of slips of the tongue, consisting of two anticipation errors and five substitution errors, while no perseveration errors were identified. Substitution was the most dominant type, suggesting that lexical retrieval difficulties occurred more frequently than phonological planning errors during spontaneous speech. These findings indicate that speech production involves complex cognitive processes, particularly in rapid and unplanned communication. The study also demonstrates that podcasts provide authentic linguistic data for psycholinguistic research and supports the view that slips of the tongue are systematic rather than random phenomena.
Nazmita KamilaHaliza Aditha Parashyla AdithaRahadian Farel AgusdiadiFazkia Dinar AzzahraShenny Ratna AmeliaMuhamad Ashe Fahrizal

https://journal.uim-makassar.ac.id/ashlition/article/view/2257

This study investigates sixth-grade students' perceptions of role play as a method for improving English speaking skills at Nurul Ilmi Bilingual Integrated Islamic School Bekasi (NIBIIS Primary). Employing a qualitative method, data were collected through classroom observation and semi-structured interviews with seven students selected via purposive sampling based on varying levels of English speaking proficiency and participation. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. The findings reveal three themes regarding students' perceptions: engagement in role play, building self-confidence, and challenges in role play. Most students held positive perceptions, reporting improvements in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, as well as growing confidence over time. However, speaking anxiety and memorization difficulties were identified as common challenges. Two themes of influencing factors were identified: extrinsic factors, including teacher support, peer support, parental support, activity structure, physical classroom conditions, and time adequacy were determining the intrinsic motivation; and intrinsic factors, including self-regulated. These findings suggest that role play is a valuable speaking activity, though its impact on confidence is highly individual.
Fitri PrawitaDwi Rezki Hardianto Putra RustanSuci Madiarti Isman

https://journal.uim-makassar.ac.id/ashlition/article/view/2281

Pedagogical practices in EFL higher education significantly shape students’ engagement and learning experiences, yet classroom-based studies that foreground students’ perspectives remain limited. This study explores how instructional approaches in university EFL classrooms influence student engagement, focusing on grammar and speaking courses within an English education programme. Employing a qualitative classroom-based case study design, data were collected through students’ reflective journals, complemented by classroom observations and teaching documents, and analysed thematically. The findings indicate that engagement was enhanced when explicit grammar instruction was integrated with contextualised practice, and when speaking activities were designed to be practice-oriented, interactive, and collaborative. Students reported increased confidence and participation in classrooms characterised by supportive interactional patterns and reduced fear of making mistakes. However, speaking anxiety and limited vocabulary continued to pose challenges, highlighting the persistent affective dimensions of language learning. By foregrounding students’ reflective voices, this study contributes to discussions on student engagement in EFL higher education, demonstrating how instructional design and affective support intersect in shaping classroom participation. The findings underscore the importance of pedagogical sensitivity and interactional design in fostering meaningful engagement at the university level.
Rizka IndahyantiAli Wira Rahman

https://journal.uim-makassar.ac.id/ashlition/article/view/2213

An inseparable part of real life is social class division which relates to how society is structured based on class. This class division is classified by Karl Marx into two categories: proletariat or lower class and bourgeois or upper class. Literary works like films as depictions of real life conditions and societal problems have an important role in society. One of the films that reflect social class issues is Snowpiercer, released in 2013, by Bong Joon Ho, which is a post-apocalyptic film about a train with its passengers divided according to their social class. This study’s objective is to analyze the inequality of social classes in Snowpiercer through the selected monologues and dialogues of the characters by applying Marxist theoretical lens using a qualitative descriptive method. From the analysis of each data, Snowpiercer presents social class inequality between the lower and upper classes inside the train through its characters’ monologues and dialogues that include inequality in access to resources, different power relations, and exploitation that leads to resistance of the lower class to seek equality. This study’s findings indicate that Snowpiercer acts as a mirror to real social problems that humans face rather than as mere entertainment.
Karina AuliaJamaluddin NasutionHafizha Putri ZahwaPutri Rosari SimbolonMutia Zahra

https://journal.uim-makassar.ac.id/ashlition/article/view/2347

This study examines how recent Asian horror cinema negotiates women’s collective memories and patriarchal trauma through the spectral presence of female ghosts. Using Halbwachs’ theory of collective memory, the research analyzed three films—The Queen of Black Magic (Indonesia, 2019), The Medium (Thailand, 2021), and Incantation (Taiwan, 2022). These films transform women’s silenced suffering into cultural archives of resistance by repositioning female ghosts as agents of memory and critique. Through haunting, possession, and confession, they convert private trauma into collective testimony, challenging patriarchal authority while ensuring intergenerational remembrance. Narrative and visual strategies reveal that ghosts not only symbolize unresolved trauma but also redistribute moral responsibility across communities. This analysis highlights how Asian horror cinema functions as a site of cultural politics, where suppressed voices reemerge as haunting presences that resist erasure. Ultimately, the study underscores cinema’s role in preserving women’s memories, destabilizing patriarchal narratives, and reshaping cultural understandings of gendered trauma.
Syahruni JunaidNahdhiyah NahdhiyahNasrum Nasrum

https://journal.uim-makassar.ac.id/ashlition/article/view/2355

This study aims to develop a constructivist game-based English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learning model for higher education students and to examine the quality of the developed product in terms of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The study employed a research and development design using the ADDIE model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through needs analysis questionnaires, classroom observation, expert validation sheets, lecturer and student response questionnaires, limited interviews, and learning achievement tests. The developed product includes learning syntax, ESP materials, game scenarios, game media, student worksheets, and evaluation instruments. The needs analysis showed that students required ESP learning that was more contextual, active, communicative, collaborative, and engaging. Expert validation indicated that the product obtained an average score of 86%, categorized as highly valid. The practicality score based on lecturer and student responses reached 86.8%, categorized as highly practical. The effectiveness of the product was reflected in the increase of the average pre-test score from 62.4 to 81.7 in the post-test, with a gain of 19.3 points and 84.4% learning mastery. The findings suggest that constructivist game-based ESP learning is feasible as an instructional alternative in higher education because it integrates needs-based ESP content, constructivist learning principles, and game-based classroom interaction into an active and meaningful learning experience.
Muis SaidHelmi SyukurMuhammad Taufik

https://journal.uim-makassar.ac.id/ashlition/article/view/2318

The increasing popularity of Instagram as a promotional platform has influenced language in café advertising, particularly through the combination of Indonesian and English. This phenomenon, known as code-mixing, has become a common strategy for creating attractive promotional messages and building a modern brand image. This study aimed to identify the forms of code-mixing used in café advertising content on Instagram. This study employed a qualitative descriptive research design. The data consisted of promotional captions and promotional texts displayed in Instagram post images collected from the official Instagram accounts of eight cafés in Makassar, published between November 2023 and December 2025. The data were collected through observation and documentation and analyzed based on Muysken’s (2000) classification of code-mixing, which consists of insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The findings revealed 38 instances of code-mixing, comprising 33 instances of insertion and 5 instances of alternation, while no instances of congruent lexicalization were identified. The results indicate that insertion was the dominant type of code-mixing, showing that English words and phrases were more frequently embedded into Indonesian sentence structures than other forms of code-mixing. This study contributes to sociolinguistic research by providing empirical evidence of the forms of code-mixing used in café advertising content on Instagram, particularly in the context of digital promotion in Makassar.
Sri RahayuAndi SamsurijalAlfiandy Kamal

https://journal.uim-makassar.ac.id/ashlition/article/view/2335

This study aims to investigate the types of conceptual metaphors and their meanings in the selected songs from Enhypen’s Orange Blood album. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyze the English-language expressions found in the original lyrics of four selected songs: Sweet Venom, Still Monster, Blind, and Orange Flower (You Complete Me). The analysis was conducted using Conceptual Metaphor Theory proposed by Lakoff & Johnson, (1980). The findings revealed that there were eleven conceptual metaphorical expressions, consisting of three structural metaphors, two orientational metaphors, and six ontological metaphors, with ontological metaphors being the most dominant type. The semantic analysis showed that the denotative meanings represent the literal meanings of lexical items, while the connotative meanings reveal deeper concepts related to love, identity, emotional conflict, sacrifice, healing, hope, and personal growth. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that the metaphors are not used independently but form an interconnected conceptual system across the selected songs. Together, these metaphors describe a journey of emotional transformation that begins with attraction and inner conflict, progresses through sacrifice, and concludes with healing and self-acceptance. This study demonstrates that conceptual metaphors in contemporary K-pop songs function not only as stylistic devices within individual lyrics but also as cognitive and narrative structures that create thematic coherence at the album level.
Fanina Sri NirajatiAndi SamsurijalDahniar DahniarTahir Tahir
